The importance of Dr. Nakano Jan. 25th, 2010 @ 01:07 am
Dr. Nakano was good enough to share some of his logic with me the past few nights, for which I was most grateful. First and foremost, was his lesson of quiet shame.

Shame:
A. A painful emotion caused by a strong sense of guilt, embarrassment, unworthiness, or disgrace.
Capacity for such a feeling: "Have you no shame?"
B. One that brings dishonor, disgrace, or condemnation.
C. A condition of disgrace or dishonor; ignominy.
D. A great disappointment.

According to Dr. Nakano, people react differently according to the intensity of the emotion, and by the environment they find themselves in. For example; in Japan, minor slights and mistakes can be regarded with great shame, due to the cultures rigid view of rules. However, what might pass for a shameful act there might be considered a minor thing in Brazil, where the culture is more open.

Depending on the severity of the disgrace, the self-imposed punishment can range anywhere from depression, to self mutilation. Of course, many factors must be considered into the event which caused the shaming, and the mind of the shamed individual. Since every culture deals with the emotion of shame in different ways, it can be assumed the shamed individual will act accordingly. However, this is not always the case; in places like the United States, which experiences a cultural conflict, one must observe the family & acquaintances of the individual to see the possible result of emotional shame. Even then, however, it is difficult to say with certainty an individual might do.

Dr. Nakano has dipped into this subject a few times, though he finds it too distasteful to study it too much. Its self-loathing nature makes it vastly too morbid, and thus unsatisfactory at the end of the day. As he put it;

"Those who harbor an unhealthy obsession with shame, find themselves morbidly occupied with their own failures."

On a side note, the curious thing of shame is that the only forgiveness acceptable to an individual who places shame on themselves is their own forgiveness, which can sometimes be harder to attain than the forgiveness of others. A fascinating thing all together.

.. I really don't understand the outrageous reactions by some of these people so opposed to national healthcare. I would be VERY interested to hear from someone who is opposed to it (if I even know anyone who is): What SPECIFICALLY do you find so objectionable about national health care? It's not going to replace private health care.. it's just an option for people who can't AFFORD private health insurance. If your answer in any way shape or form references Sarah Palin's "death council" comment as being valid, well then your answer is worthless.

BIlly Mays and Anthony Sullivan to host "Pitchmen" Mar. 28th, 2009 @ 04:54 pm

Hahahaha.. Billy Mays and Anthony Sullivan. This sounds like it'll be awesome. Notice Vince Offer (Shlomi) is not there. I heard on a radio show (I forget which) that Billy Mays was interviewed on that Mays was pissed at Offer for pitching knockoffs of his products, and challenged him to a sell-off. That would be an epic fight.

Speaking of..

Wow.. the design is almost 40 years old, and it's getting a new lease on life. Though I guess it's actually based off the F-15E, and technically is only a 20 year old design..

Quoted from the article:
"Apostrophes denote possessions that are no longer accurate, and are not needed," he said. "More importantly, they confuse people. If I want to go to a restaurant, I don't want to have an A-level (high school diploma) in English to find it."

Sooo.. we should just let our kids have a rudimentary grasp of the language and not bother with education so it'll be easier on us? Is this what he's implying? has anyone ever been confused by an apostrophe?

The article, in case it gets dropped )
» Embry-Riddle
So, Embry-Riddle is my top choice in aviation schools. They have two campuses, one in Daytona Beach in Florida, the other in Prescott, AZ. I'm leaning toward Daytona, but I'm not married to either.

After talking to them, if I went in with a BFA in photo into an undergrad program, they would treat me as a transfer student which means I would have all my gen-ed stuff complete, and I could finish a BS in Aviation Science within two or three years (their aviation program is designed to take three, but most take four).

My other option is to go the Masters of Aviation Science route. The problem with this is, I don't know if I will have enough time to study for and take the GRE and apply in time for fall, and on top of that I don't know if I would be eligible for ROTC in a masters program. Research will tell, I suppose..
